After graduating from UCLA, she taught in various high schools and junior highs before moving to San Luis Obispo County and joining its thriving music scene. There she turned to developing her flute studio and was the piccoloist and flutist in the San Luis Obispo Symphony for forty years along with being a member of the orchestras for Opera SLO, the SLO Master Chorale, Festival Mosaic, and various touring artists when they came to town. Once in the Bay area, Martha expanded her horizons by learning the tin whistle for Scottish dancing and the traverso for various Baroque chamber groups.
Upon retirement, she followed her family to the Bay Area. As other retired music teachers had done for her, Martha sought out a music program where she could volunteer, meeting Bob Athayde at Stanley Middle School. That was ten years ago, and through the generous support of LPIE and now the Campo Music Boosters, she hasn’t retired at all but has been able to redirect her musical life. At the direction of Mrs. Barnett, Martha is looking forward to working with the Campo flute sections and developing our flute choir. This work has been further supported by the use of the Generations in Jazz Foundation’s low flute collection.
In the last 15 years, Martha’s playing and arranging have shifted to the low flutes of the flute family and flute choirs, touring overseas and playing throughout California. When not focused on music, Martha enjoys time with her grandchildren, pursuing various art endeavors, attempting to keep her garden in check, and taking advantage of all our beautiful area has to offer.
